About the CLUES Online Citizenship Co-Teacher Volunteer Opportunity

Purpose of Position:
Volunteer teachers in our U.S. Citizenship classes prepare students to succeed in their naturalization interviews with USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services). Class topics include the naturalization process, U.S. history and civics, and interview preparation and practice. Lessons also help students strengthen their English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Classes are held virtually via Zoom, making it easy to contribute from anywhere.

Position Type: Unpaid Volunteer

Schedule: Mondays, 6:00–8:00 p.m. CST, via Zoom

Program Dates: 
Fall 2026: Mondays, September 14 - Monday, December 14, 2026
Winter 2027: Mondays, January 25 - Monday, April 19, 2027

Responsibilities

  • Co-teach the citizenship class every Monday evening for the entire term.
  • Use CLUES’ curriculum and provided resources to deliver engaging lessons.
  • Communicate regularly with the program coordinator regarding scheduling, student progress, and classroom concerns.

Requirements & Training

  • Access to a computer and reliable internet connection. 
  • Observe at least one adult ESL (English as a Second Language) or citizenship class before teaching. 
  • Attend CLUES’ New Teacher Orientation.
  • Complete volunteer trainings required by the Minnesota Department of Education.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills in English.
  • Ability to teach English and citizenship skills to adult learners.
  • Responsible, punctual, encouraging, flexible, and collaborative.
  • Respectful and open to diverse experiences, values, and backgrounds.
  • Prior teaching or tutoring experience is preferred but not required.
  • Proficiency with Zoom is preferred but not required.

Commitment

  • Approximately 2–3 hours per week, including prep time.
  • Volunteers are expected to commit to teaching for the entire class term: 14 weeks for the fall and spring terms, and 12 weeks for the summer term.
  • Attend check-ins or team meetings as needed.

  • Volunteers are supervised by the CLUES Education Program Coordinator.

Technology & Tools

  • Classes are conducted virtually via Zoom.
  • CLUES provides access to online teaching resources and digital materials.

CLUES reserves the right to terminate an internship or volunteer commitment if behavior does not comply with CLUES policies.
